One question has guided his career: how can varicose veins be treated in ever less invasive ways, while backing each step with solid clinical evidence? He has answered it twice.
At VNUS Medical Technologies, from 1999 to 2012, as a clinical researcher. He helped spread endovenous radiofrequency ablation, which replaced part of surgical procedures with a catheter-based treatment.
At Theraclion since 2013, as Chief Medical Officer, in charge of clinical research and the development of a medical device. With high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), treatment goes one step further: it works from outside the body, with no incision and no catheter. He bridges the technology and the daily practice of vascular physicians, and presents ultrasound-guided treatment of the superficial leg veins at medical congresses.
His conviction: an innovation is only worth something if physicians adopt it, and that takes rigorous clinical studies and close dialogue with practitioners. In 2017, he summed up his goal as offering “a new non-invasive option to the growing number of patients”.
Today, he wants HIFU treatment of varicose veins to be recognised by the vascular community, just as radiofrequency ablation was. To get there, he relies on solid clinical data in Europe and in the United States, where Theraclion is running the pivotal study on Sonovein®, and on a wider network of centres and practitioners trained in the technique. His aim has not changed: patients with venous insufficiency should be able to get treatment without an incision or a catheter.
He signs: the medical side of HIFU technology, medical topics explained for the general public, advice for patients, and his view on the potential of HIFU in medicine.
He does not sign: engineering, the business model or business ambitions.
