Varicose veins often run in families. Genetics play a real role, though they are only one piece of the puzzle. Here is what research does and does not yet know.

Varicose veins are veins that struggle to carry blood back up to the heart, a common sign of chronic venous disease. They often look twisted, swollen and enlarged. Usually cosmetic, they can become a medical issue if complications develop. But do they run in families?

What are the risk factors?

There is no single cause for varicose veins: their formation is multifactorial, and many risk factors, from gender and age to obesity, pregnancy and family history, have been identified. Tellingly, not everyone exposed to these factors develops varicose veins, which suggests genetics matter.

Are genetics the main reason?

Most researchers and doctors are convinced that genetics play a moderate-to-strong role in chronic venous disease. A family history of venous insufficiency is often a significant risk factor for an individual. Pinning down exactly how genetics work, though, has proven tricky.

Why understanding the genetics matters

A clearer genetic picture would explain why varicose veins sometimes appear in young adults with no obvious cause. More importantly, it could identify high-risk groups and enable early, targeted prevention, lifestyle changes or compression, before the disease progresses. For now, though, the underlying genetics are only partly understood, so high-risk patients cannot yet be identified precisely.
